Beauty, Happiness, and a $3 Plate

March 16, 2010

I’ve mentioned this before, and it’s true.  I’ve been suffering from a decorating paralysis for a couple of years now.  My husband and I did a few renovations on our home, and then immediately had our son.  All thoughts of decorating were replaced by thoughts of SLEEP, and how to get more of it!

As soon as I didn’t have that excuse anymore, I fell into the thought pattern that I would fix things up as soon as I had a grand plan, and had everything I needed to make it perfect.  I don’t think I’m the only one who has fallen into this trap, or AM I??

Recently, my husband and I found out that we would be filming a webisode at our house, and we needed our house to look more “homey.”  Now, before my son came along, my husband and I enjoyed going to garage sales and thrifty/antique stores to find things for our home.  I felt like these small treasures came with their own stories and memories of days spent with my husband, rather than just something out of a box that everyone else could also buy.

But, let me tell you, $7 and a trip to TJ Maxx with my mom last week has completely changed my mind about that!!  One look at these little bird plates, (okay, and then a second look at the prices: $2.99 and $3.99) and I was in love.

Aren't they sweet?

And another look at this little flowery plate for $2.50 and boy, I was a goner!  And so, now I have a few pieces up in our house that may not have that cool antiquey story behind them, but hey, they’ll remind me of a day spent shopping with my mother, and that’s more than good enough for me!

$2.50 bowl on $10 antique store plate hanger with 2 plates I already had.

And yes, it is extremely sad that it took the threat of a 12-man film crew coming over for me to inexpensively create a more welcoming and relaxing vibe in our home.  I love my little house, and I want it to reflect the beauty and happiness that I find in my family to everyone who enters.   So, using the inspiration from my favorite bloggers, I hope there will be more changes on the way!

    Jamie-
It was the best shopping day ever!! Way too much fun. Especially the shower curtain and the towels. Just right for you young ones. Most of all–just being together.
    love you-mom

    Jamie,
Did you get your mother’s comment? We had technical difficulties.
I love your new plates from TJ Max. What fun to hear of your
    adventures! Aunt Saralyn
